| | Three hot posters
have recently arrived in the shop. The new posters present a really varied mixture of music styles. Apparently, I cannot avoid composing another such a mixtape before saying bye bye and leaving for the summer break.
The cover of an American magazine, dating from a very dark period of history, inspired me for the Best Coast Poster. At the beginning of the 30th, weren't the Americans the only ones up shit's creek without a paddle looking in a shuddered yet fasctinated way at the development in Hitler Germany and seeing themselves confronted with a propaganda machine of unknown extent. This cover showed a photograph of a scene at the beach in a perspective typical of Riefenstahl. Without wasting further thoughts on a draft, I directly copied the photo by drawing it for the Best Coast Poster. Taken out of the “holy world” context, the poster now radiates a perfect Beach Boys atmosphere. It belongs into every well packed holiday luggage!
I have finally managed to take aim at Slayer, the oldest stagers of speed metal, and, according to my taste, I hit them precisely between the eyes. Eventually I was able to do away with a picture in my head and to get rid of this rattling guitar. I possibly wouldn't put the poster on the wall above my bed, but such an electric “cleaver” fits perfectly above the fireplace! (FlickrLink: Slayer)
The elephant on the new Pearl Jam Poster (Berlin, Wuhlheide, 6/2010) is printed with four different, transparent shades of white on black cardboard. Beforehand, each of these layers was drawn by hand in an elaborated and time-consuming way, better, it was dotted. The completed poster has thus gained an enormous depth. (FlickrLink: Pearl Jam). My personal motivation to choose half an elephant for the Pearl Jam Poster wasn't based on Africa and the FIFA World Cup, but, as my colleagues use to put it, on another

The days are counted...
till the Douze print shop opens its doors a last time - to then close them forever. Sometimes you have to separate from the old to make space for new things: in my case a new print shop! In the beginning of 2010, the Douze studio moves into a bigger print shop! There will regularly be little poster shows and exhibitions in a showroom. You'll get more information via e-mail and here on the screen. Speaking of making space: long winter nights are made for changing the walls in your home. And here you find the material you need!
The posters which left the dryer during the last days are to be the last ones from the old, dark manufactory. They also are a journey through the history of rock – and for this reason sort of antique from the first day on. At least Middle Ages are The Sonics, who came to Germany for one concert. A great band – for whose breakthrough we've been waiting in vain till today. The problem of the band is not their music – but their timing. “Back then in the 60s, The Sonics were at least ten years ahead of their times. Today, in the 21st century, it's about thirty years too late for them.” (Bodo Mrozek) The poster for the only show in Germany is printed with copper... and offers a startling view when the lights go off...
About twenty years after The Sonics, Mudhoney invented a sound which later was called grunge. Philosophizing with my friend Kempe (record store Whispers/Leipzig) what really makes grunge what it is, the answer was clear: Lumberjack shirts! Freshly washed and ironed, Mudhoney come out of the cupboard – for every taste in color, now in the shop.
A female astronaut boards the rocket. Having obviously been inspired by Mette Lindberg, the charismatic lead singer of the Danish band Asteroids Galaxy Tour, I drew and printed the second part of my pin-up set. On the third and last poster of the pin-up set, a cowgirl with a 9mm iron gun in her belt, blinking at the delinquent, promotes the devastating Revolverfest with Deadbolt, the Sewergrooves, who had come from Sweden specially for this show, and the metal rockers Gorilla Monsoon from Dresden. Afterwards everyone was sick for three days.
My French colleague TANXXX organized a poster series for the American stoner-metal band Keelhaul, who recently toured through Europe. The audience of Lisbon had the chance to rock the boat with Keelhaul and Circle before finally keel-hauling with ISIS. Following the sailors' tradition, the one-eyed ship's cook accompanied the whole action on his squeeze box, exactly the way you see it on my poster.
Every year, King Buzzo hunts his flock through the cities. Yes, the Melvins again leave a track of destruction behind them in Europe! And it lures their disciples into dark clubs in order to celebrate a noisy mass as it can rarely be seen. The propaganda for the Munich concert comes from the Douze studio. The slim TIKI surfer on the Lombego Surfers poster was drawn by Mathias from the Wildsmile Studio. It was printed in three colors on heavy cardboard, black like a Polynesian night. The show was the last gig of the ColoredGigs poster show in Dresden. That the exposition and the sale were a great success and that we're already planning a new show, shall only be mentioned briefly here.
The big hit of this winter's concert season are doubtlessly the gigs of the American superband Them Crooked Vultures, which has just been formed this year. The singer and guitar player Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age, Kyuss), the bassist, mandolin player and keyboarder John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) and the drummer Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters, Nirvana) break rock down to its pieces and then rebuild it in a never before heard way. The poster for their show in Berlin is elaborately drawn and printed with four screens in three different white nuances and one varnish on dark black cardboard.;

This autumn will be colorful!
Really colorful! After two poster shows at the OYA Festival in Oslo we’ll bring, apart from the Nordic weather, tons of new posters to your city: From September the 19th to October the 2nd, the Gallery Night Walk in Berlin Kreuzberg presents the exhibition “20 Favourite Pieces”, sort of a warm-up for the Flatstock Europe, which runs parallel to the Reeperbahnfestival in Hamburg from the 24th to the 26th September, where many international poster artists offer their screen printed music interpretations for sale. In the same time, the Gallery Auf Halb Acht presents the Squeegeedragger Group show. Further information you can find here. A big part of the circus then moves on to Dresden to open the gates of the Gallery Treibhaus and of the Groovestation for the Colored Gigs poster show on time, on September the 30th. Jay Ryan, Diana Sudyka, Lil Tuffy, Guy Burwell, Crosshair, Wildsmile and the Douze Studio with me have confirmed for the show. You can recognize me by the crate of Radeberger beer on which I’ll sit and try to take a rest from the exertions of the last weeks.
And now some background information about the new posters in the shop: With full pockets, a new dacha and gold teeth, Dresden’s local heroes Robert and the Roboters retire on their well-earned musicians’ pension. Of course not without saying goodbye properly to their fans with a final show. As a little present, I printed some posters with moist eyes – each one of the posters got soaked with a tear. He who buys a poster, can do with it whatever he wants … e.g. lick it attentively – then he’ll find it – the salty spot…
And then there was still Clutch – who rushed through the capital at the end of their tour to give an ingenious concert and to teach us “Krauts” a lesson in the matter of rock music. I was shortly tempted to print motor oil through the screen for this poster. But then my Greenpeace sticker came into my sight and I set this experiment aside.
Long time before we were born, this band provoked ecstatic cries from our mothers; and the hips of our fathers … I don’t even want to think about it … I also don’t want to mention the band’s name – the motive of my new art print leaves no room for speculations. Printed with five colors, in a mini edition of only 36 pieces. Soon to be seen and to be purchased in the Hamburg Beatlemania Museum.
Little strokes fell big oaks. Yes, the organizers and makers of, well, at least by definition, serious music can’t ignore screen print designs anymore. Thus, I designed for the first time the premiere posters of the State Operetta Dresden for one season. You can see the results and many other things, as usual, in the gallery. And the last news is: Many new photo galleries moved to my Flickr Account. Feel free to flick!
